How To Practice Gratitude Daily (plus All The Benefits)

Why Practice Gratitude?

“Try practicing gratitude daily” is a pretty universal sentiment right now.

Psychotherapists, wellness gurus on Instagram and woo-woo bloggers like me alike point to gratitude as an important part of the emotional well-being puzzle. And it makes sense why!

There has been tons of scientific and psychological research into the effects and benefits of practicing gratitude. In addition, it is a philosophical cornerstone of spiritual practices.

In this post, I’m going to run through some simple but powerful ways to make practicing gratitude part of your daily life and routine.

I talk about what makes gratitude effective and worthwhile, and offer tips for how to practice it practically, emotionally, and spiritually in daily life.

So, here we go.

1. Meditation

Take some time in the day to think about everything you already have in your life that you’re thankful for.

Genuinely feel and visualize the appreciation running through you from tip to toe.

Recognize the value of the things that you may sometimes take for granted. It could be the roof over your head, your cosy bed, your clothes, your family, the money in your bank account, your health, your life.

Slow down and shift your focus. Say thank you, either out loud or silently to yourself. Let the sensations and positive feelings flow.

You could also listen to a guided gratitude meditation on YouTube or Spotify for extra guidance if you’re unsure of where to start.

We’re so used to a fast lifestyle with so much stuff, stimulation and sensory overload, it can be unnerving to just sit with the quiet for a while.

Then, in those moments, you realize how much you already have.

2. Journaling

Record your daily gratitudes in a gratitude journal for a more tangible expression and reminder of all the wonderful things in your life that you’re thankful for.

You can journal first thing in the morning or right before bed – whatever works for you personally! For me, it completely depends on the day and the flow of my mood.

Sit somewhere quiet and cosy to get yourself into a relaxed head space.

As I live just round the corner from the beach, in the summer time I like to start my day by journaling by the sea when it’s sunny. The natural light, warmth and feelings of optimism evoke strong gratitude and positive emotions so effortlessly.

You could write a simple gratitude list, bullet pointing all of the things you’re grateful for.

Or alternatively you could write more of a diary entry to focus on a specific thing or event if you’re trying to manifest.

Making gratitude journaling a daily or regular practice can keep you from falling into a negative thought spiral where you latch on emotionally to things you don’t have.

Of course, it is completely normal and human to want things. And to recognize how your life could be improved, then take action to change it.

However, having your mindset stuck in a place of lack 24/7 is detrimental to your overall well-being.

Practicing gratitude is basically about creating a positive mental and emotional feedback loop to enable you to function better. It can open the door to other positive, desirable emotions and traits, such as calmness, confidence, kindness and generosity.

3. Appreciate Your Loved Ones

Another great way to practice gratitude daily is to tell your family and friends how much they mean to you, and how grateful you are to have them in your life.

Better yet, show them!

The best way to express your love and gratitude will depend on the individual and their love language.

Some people prefer to receive love through words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, gifts, or physical touch.

If you live with your family, you could tidy the house or run errands to show your appreciation and embody your gratitude.

Alternatively, you could organize a games night or a movie night with your roomates to spend some quality time together.

Being grateful and showing your gratitude can ultimately strengthen your familial, platonic and romantic relationships. Others may perceive you as being more appreciative and amiable.

4. Practice Self Care

Don’t forget to show yourself gratitude too!

That is key for cultivating a calm, confident and empowered mindset.

Of course, you can be grateful for all the material things and interpersonal relationships in your life.

But the relationship you have with yourself is THE most important thing and should be honoured just as much.

There are numerous ways to practice self care. Your choices will be based on your personal needs, priorities and preferences.

Self care isn’t only about bubble baths with salts and oils (although those are also wonderful).

It encompasses the way you speak to yourself internally. Additionally, the ways that you interact with your own thoughts and your relationship with your beliefs.

It means cultivating healthy coping mechanisms and showing up for yourself.

A lot of the work is internal, like gratitude practice. It’s about creating a space in which you can thrive and effectively manage the challenges of life.

By re-framing negative thoughts and limiting beliefs, you’re embodying gratitude for yourself and your mental wellbeing.

That’s powerful stuff.

Again, this is where gratitude as a positive mental and emotional feedback loop comes into play.

The Emotional Benefits of Practicing Gratitude

Practicing gratitude daily can lead to:

  • Improved physical health: the idea being that positive emotions evoked through gratitude practice enable you to take better care of yourself physically through nourishing yourself and moving your body (or not) in a way that’s right for you
  • Improved psychological health: holding space for gratitude attunes your mind to notice and respond to the positives rather than letting negative emotions overpower the mind; daily gratitude practice such as journaling can make you more optimistic and spiritually minded rather than materialistic
  • Improved self esteem: practicing gratitude can alleviate the tendency for social comparison and internalized inadequacy, and improve resilience due to the positive emotional feedback loop
  • Improved relationships: again, the positive, desirable traits that arise from feeling grateful can make you more social, appreciative and dependable, leading to a stronger social network and sense of support
